MaryStanishParticipant
Thank you for those words. They’ve really been a help. I had the feedback loop and it was a bit insightful on their thoughts on the position vs what I was told by my friend on the team. It seems they wanted me to showcase more leadership and management qualities even though this wasn’t exactly a managing position. On the plus side, I now have relations with folks on that team and they offered to give me tidbits of work to try. Which to me translates as doing two jobs at one company with no pay raise. (What am I an intern?! LOL.) I’ll keep tabs on the team but still haven’t found the perfect fit for what I want to get paid and what I want to do.
There are probably other terms I’m not thinking of to search for. 🙂 I may need to sit and do a brainstorm session. But I also found a “free course” (probably an intro) to making money on YouTube about your passion. I figured it couldn’t hurt to learn how to take advantage of the algorithm and see if its a potential side thing I can do.
Also, I decided to take a week off in July to go to the beach. I haven’t since I moved to Texas 9 years ago. I also have a cute pattern to sew my own swimsuit with so I’m trying to combat my disappointment and continual, growing frustration with my current position.
MaryStanishParticipantHi again,
Reading your reply to Kelly was also helpful to me today. I haven’t had any luck with interviews lately. I have been told I interview well and I guess I just get my hopes up so much that it really hurts when it gets knocked down.
I interviewed well (or so I thought) for the internal position and felt based on my competition I had this in the bag. I got the disappointing news yesterday that they would not be going forward with me. It is extremely frustrating because I felt like I found a way out of my yucky situation on my team (which gets worse every week, but I can’t quit because I live paycheck to paycheck). It’s also triggering my depression more than I thought it would. My brain has fast-tracked to reminding me that I also haven’t had a date ever since I started working at this company and turned 30.
On a slight plus side, I will have a feedback loop with the interviewer so I can learn what I did well and “where I can grow”. Supposedly, they will hire more of this position soon, my friend on the team has got my back.
It’s probably more of a patience thing, but UGH. Starting back from square one. I always seem to end up at this square.
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. Time heals all wounds and I’m sure looking back I’ll see it was all for the best.MaryStanishParticipantUpdate on post interview. The in-person interview went well I think. But it’s been over a week and I have not heard anything back. Based on how aggressive they were before I’m not sure I got it. But still waiting.
However, a fellow employee just brought up that another position on her team that opened up. It’ll meet my pay requirements and such, but long term I’d like to be more involved in Instructional Design (internal training and such). The position has a slight training element to it. I’d be under a different manager and working with a friend. So that’s what I’m dealing with. Not sure if it’s just a shiny thing or yet another bridge job. 😉
MaryStanishParticipantGood news. I’m going in for a 2 hour on-site interview. I did learn that they have flexible hours so long as I work 40 hours a week so that helps with my concerns about commute time. I think I’ll get a better feel for their company culture and some of the people I may work with. It’s definitely the recruiter that comes off as aggressive.
But of course, right before the interview my cat scratched my nose so I have a bit of a battle scar. 😀
MaryStanishParticipantHi again!
Still lingering about. I’ve got a phone interview on Friday with a tech company. The process has got me thinking about some of the trickiness with applying and interviewing while still working full time. The office where I work has terrible phone reception. I tend not to get messages or even hear my phone until later. And since I share my office space with others, it’s not the best place to TAKE a call. It stresses me out when they just call and I don’t get the call until after the work day when I usually check my phone for messages.I’m also a little hazy about this particular company. The location is not ideal since it would require about a 50 minute commute in rush hour traffic. And I feel like they’ve been kind of aggressive. When asked for materials, I said I could get them something Monday morning. They demand that I get it in Sunday night. I’m hoping its just the recruiter who is aggressive and not the hiring manager I’m talking to on Friday. Because now I’m really uneasy and they seem desperate. :/ I’m trying to use the 9 or 10 decision factor at this point. This company is hovering at an 8 or 7. >_> But I still feel like I should give them a chance to plead their case as it were. 🙂
Also, I got my merit-based raise this year. Finally earning more than I did when I was tech support…but still way under market.
MaryStanishParticipantSo interesting situation going on. I was contacted by a recruiter and it did sound like a bit of a dream job. However, the company she was recruiting for is one of my current company’s competitors. I checked my documents and we have a non-compete clause meaning I can’t work for this company until a year after my current position is terminated. :/ Just feeling a BIT grumpy since there are only 3 companies we compete with: Shopify, Volusion and Magento. Magento called and it would be a better paying situation too.
I have violated such a clause in the past when I started my own company. I was told by that company’s CTO that they could legally pursue this, but chose not to. >_> So, I’m not willing to take the risk and do it again.
Thoughts on non-compete agreements?MaryStanishParticipantHappy Mardi Gras and early Valentines!
Still looking for new tech writer job, but I feel like its still the dry season. Or maybe just where I’m looking.
Reading the post about moving has got me thinking maybe looking outside of Austin. I have been here almost 9 years now so I’m pretty rooted. (Maybe just impatient. You know. Or perhaps I should review my resume. :/)I will be talking to my company’s trainer this week and continue to work on learning how to make training materials.
MaryStanishParticipantWell, I lead the meeting where everyone took the quiz. There may be some interested in the course. 😉 It didn’t go how I’d hoped as my manager (Sidehustler…I was going to peg him as a tribe member…it may be a secondary profile. He’s super loyal to the company.) felt that “personality quizzes” depend on where you’re at during a given time. Which was followed up by someone bringing up an article they ready about how personality tests are unhelpful. (sigh) I tried to steer it back with comments on how it helps me relate to others better because I know where the value lies. We have a mix of Sidehuslters, a few thrivers, a couple tribe members…and ONE firestarter. Which makes sense because he’s always talking about starting his own business and also doesn’t care if he loses this job because he can always get another.
I also heard back from the company I applied to and I learned I did not get the position. They are putting it on hold but do plan on expanding the documentation team during the year so I may work for them anyway. 🙂
For now, I’m going to enjoy a holiday break. I get the week of Christmas off so I’m going to nurse my thriver side and enjoy the heck out that week off. Then look forward to the vacation with my parents. ^^
Hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday.MaryStanishParticipantEryn, so sorry it didn’t pan out. I feel like around this time of year is the hardest to really find a job on an emotional level because of everything else that goes around during this season. I’m thinking of taking a little holiday break from my weekly job search/application process. Today I’m just focusing on creating a CV template because I spend so long in the application process on that step that sometimes my session times out. I always write a CV personally for every job. Which is exhausting so I’m giving myself a bit of a boost for the next time I apply.
And thanks so much Kristen for the suggestions. I’m really hoping we have some meaningful conversations during the discussion. 🙂
MaryStanishParticipantNo job updates really, but I’m planning for the next team meeting I have to lead on the 14th this month. My plan is to have all my teammates take the Passion Profile Quiz and discuss our results. I’m wondering if you have any quick tips on how to best frame the discussion. Are there any discussion points that would be best to bring up? The discussion time slot is only 20 minutes and there are 11 people on the team. :/ They’ll take the quiz before the meeting with instructions copied from the web-page about “It’s only 11 questions, don’t think too hard, use your gut instinct, go!”
Thank you. 🙂
